Commons debates Combatting Hate Act amid religious exemption clashes
Government orders on the Combatting Hate Act consumed 55 per cent of the sitting as members considered report-stage amendments to Bill C-9. Conservative MP Larry Brock moved to delete the short title and warned that changes to a 56-year-old religious defence would chill expression of faith. Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux rejected those claims as misinformation and said the bill would not alter protections for places of worship.
Question period focused on employment and justice. Conservative MP Garnett Genuis pressed the government on 108,000 full-time jobs lost in a month while Liberal MP Steven MacKinnon offered condolences for an Air Canada incident before defending the government's record. Bloc Québécois MP Christine Normandin challenged the government's Supreme Court arguments on Bill 21 and the notwithstanding clause.
Decided that day
- Bill C-9 advanced at report stage
