Where they stand
Policy positions are scored only from this member's stored House words and, when it is on file, their own public website. Wikipedia and other encyclopedias may supply details such as a birth date, education or work history, and each of those details is labelled with its source, but they are never used to score a position. Members whose only sources are encyclopedias have no scored positions.
A stored score on 9 of 14 topics. Each row names the end of that topic’s axis the stored words reached, and the sentence the score rests on.
Climate
Slower phase-down, production first
The other end of this axis: Faster fossil phase-down
Opposes carbon tax repeatedly and supports natural gas and oil production.
Natural gas-generated electricity is a viable and clean source of energy. Natural gas will be there when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow. The City of Medicine Hat has recognized the need to provide a favourable investment climate that will ensure continued growth in natural gas-fired electricity.Source of that line
Defence
Higher spending and more capability
The other end of this axis: Restrain spending and deployments
Defends military personnel and calls for strong measures against threats.
We owe it to those who sacrificed and fought to protect Canada from threats both foreign and domestic. Our armed forces, our veterans, our police, and our national security agencies have paid a price to give us the freedoms we enjoy today.Source of that line
Energy
Expand production and export
The other end of this axis: Restrict new oil and gas
Supports pipelines and oil exports repeatedly.
3 million net new jobs, the lowest taxes in 50 years, the approval of four new pipelines that move over a million barrels of oil a day, a commitment to our allies, and ongoing support for families.Source of that line
Federalism
Provinces lead
The other end of this axis: Ottawa leads
Criticizes federal bills that burden provinces.
Instead of helping, the bill would place an extra burden on provinces, municipalities, and police agencies. It could potentially allow organized crime to use legitimate licensing for trafficking.Source of that line
Fiscal policy
Lower taxes and tighter spending
The other end of this axis: Higher taxes and public spending
Opposes deficits and high taxes, praises balanced budgets and low taxes.
The Conservatives advocated a different path, and our record has spoken for itself, with balanced budgets, 1.3 million net new jobs, the lowest taxes in 50 years, the approval of four new pipelines that move over a million barrels of oil a day, a commitment to our allies, and ongoing support for families.Source of that line
Foreign affairs
Assertive alliances and sanctions
The other end of this axis: Alliance restraint
Excerpts support sanctions against Russia and criticize China.
Since the invasion of Ukraine commenced in February, the Government of Canada has imposed sanctions under the Special Economic Measures Act, also known as SEMA, on over 1,000 individuals in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. However, these sanctions on their own were not grounds that would have been enough to prevent those friends of Putin from gaining citizenship, permanent residency or refugee status in Canada. Bill S-8 serves to correct that loophole. Bill S-8 also proposes to expand the scope of inadmissibility based on such sanctions.Source of that line
Housing
Public supply and demand controls
The other end of this axis: Market supply and deregulation
States Housing First works under its present structure.
I can tell you that in the community I come from, Medicine Hat, which has a nationally recognized success in dealing with homelessness, Housing First works, and it works under its present structure. I would encourage you, as we explore what that looks like in Medicine Hat, on February 16, to ask the witnesses who will be available to specifically answer that question.Source of that line
Public safety
Enforcement and sentencing
The other end of this axis: Prevention and restraint
Excerpts criticize soft-on-crime policies and support enforcement.
The Liberals' reckless drug legalization experiment, combined with their soft-on-crime bill, Bill C-5, has fuelled Canada's deadly drug crisis. Bill C-5 scrapped mandatory jail for fentanyl production and trafficking, for example. Last fall, police dismantled the largest and most sophisticated drug lab in Canadian history, capable of producing multiple kilograms of fentanyl each week, along with caches of loaded firearms, explosives and half a million dollars in cash.Source of that line
Trade
Deeper continental integration
The other end of this axis: Diversify away from one partner
Supports expanded trade and open borders with the US.
First, boosting jobs and opportunity are critical. Our economy is highly interwoven with our largest trading partner, the United States. Despite recent political turmoil across our border, our relationship remains strong, and our trade continues as we work out a revised and hopefully mutually beneficial agreement on NAFTA.Source of that line
